Veteran Character Actor and Beloved Teacher Remembered for Iconic Roles

Hollywood and academia mourn the loss of a versatile and respected talent

Lew Palter, the actor best known for his role as Isidor Straus in James Cameron's 1997 epic "Titanic," has died at the age of 94. The Brooklyn-born actor was also a beloved faculty member at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) School of Theater.

Palter passed away on June 27, 2023, from lung cancer at his home. He leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances on both the stage and screen.

Palter's portrayal of Straus, the co-owner of Macy's department store who perished in the Titanic disaster, earned him critical acclaim. He also appeared in numerous other films and television shows, including "The Untouchables," "The Commish," and "Murder, She Wrote."

In addition to his acting career, Palter was a dedicated teacher at CalArts for over three decades. He mentored countless students, many of whom went on to successful careers in the entertainment industry.
