The May 3rd, 1999 Tornado: An Unforgettable Tragedy

A Devastating Storm

On May 3rd, 1999, central Oklahoma was struck by one of the most infamous tornadoes in U.S. history. Part of a larger tornado outbreak, the EF5 Bridge Creek-Moore tornado left an unforgettable mark on the state.

A Path of Destruction

The tornado touched down southwest of Cimarron City at 9:25 pm CDT and traveled for nearly 38 miles, wreaking havoc through Chickasha, south Oklahoma City, and its suburbs. As a maximum EF5 tornado, it caused catastrophic damage, destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

The storm system that produced the May 3rd tornado also spawned multiple other large and damaging tornadoes that evening. The memory of this tragic day serves as a reminder of nature's immense power and the importance of tornado safety.
